Escaping the Debt Cycle

Escaping the Debt Cycle

Most people carry some amount of debt. But over the years, debt has become so widely acceptable in our country and culture, that people assume it was okay to splurge and pay later, on almost anything, from little thing like clothes, to luxury appliances like Flat Screen Television sets. This has resulted in millions of people being trapped in the debt cycle and in need of credit repair. Coupled with the recession, trigged by debt, loss of jobs and other factors, millions are caught in a debt cycle of monstrous proportions. Often taking one heavy debt to repay another one is like getting a temporary reprieve.

Getting out of the debt cycle starts with the acknowledgment of where you are. Acknowledge to yourself, no matter how bad the situation, that you are caught in a cycle. Because debt is rife in the times we live in today, tell yourself that no matter how bad your decisions have been, someone has made worse decisions. Thank yourself for where you are, wish well for someone who might be worse off than you.

Start With a Small Step

Decide that you have to start getting out of your debt cycle at this very moment. But don't lunge into it. Start one week at a time. Decide not to buy anything that you don't need, and we mean, don't absolutely need. In the second week, decide to make a strategy to repay your debt, no matter how long it takes. Make a list of the people you owe money to. Where you can get debts written off or negotiated, make sure you pursue those options. Vow to bring down the number of lenders, after doing so, make a plan of how you're going to repay them. While repaying the loan should be your top priority, you should also start to save. Start building an emergency fund so you don't take on more debt.

Throw away your cards or freeze them or cut them or whatever. That's right, do what it takes but minimize your dependence on credit cards. Credit card debt is the most common kind and because it's so easy, people are raking up huge credit card bills. Getting de-addicted to credit cards will be your toughest step in getting out the debt cycle.

Try and quickly repay loans that you can, either by repaying bills, consolidating your loans or selling things you don't need. Reducing that number on the list of loans that need to be repaid goes a long way in making you feel better.

Getting out of the debt cycle is hard. But approach it like a goal, think of a major goal you have achieved in your life – we all have, think hard and you'll come up with something – and apply all those goal-fulfillment strategies to the goal of getting out of the debt cycle.
